What is NMC Fitness to Practise?
Fitness to Practise (FtP) is the process the Nursing and Midwifery Council uses when a concern is raised about a nurse, midwife or nursing associate. A referral moves through screening, investigation, case examiner decisions and — in a minority of cases — a hearing. The NMC's own guidance is clear: what matters most is not that something went wrong, but how you respond. Registrants who demonstrate insight, remediation and strengthened practice consistently achieve better outcomes.
